FAQ
- Will this work on my phone or an older browser?
- Most current desktop browsers (Chrome, Edge, and recent Firefox and Safari) compress your video using the browser's own hardware-accelerated encoder, which is fast. On an older or less common browser, FileSherpa automatically falls back to a slower, software-only method — it still runs entirely on your device, it just takes longer, especially on a longer video. Very old or low-power devices may struggle either way; there's no reliable way to know in advance, so it's worth trying with a short clip first if you're unsure.
- Why does this take so long compared to a desktop video app?
- Video compression is genuinely heavy computation, and — unlike most compressors — all of it is happening on your own device rather than a powerful server, which is what keeps your file from ever being uploaded. A longer or higher-resolution video can realistically take several minutes. Keep the tab open while it runs.
- Does it keep the audio?
- Yes — the audio track is re-encoded too (to AAC, at a fixed good-quality bitrate) alongside the video, not dropped.
- Why didn't it hit my exact target size?
- Video bitrate and file size track each other closely, but not perfectly — container overhead and how the source video compresses can shift the result a little. If it lands close to your target but not under it, try a slightly higher target or accept a lower-quality result.
