Compress PDF to Target Size

Give it a size to hit — 2 MB for an email, say — and it tries several quality settings and keeps the best one that fits. Processed entirely in your browser — your files are never uploaded.

How should this be compressed?

Before you run this

  • This method redraws every page as an image. Text stops being selectable or searchable, and links and form fields are lost.
  • If your PDF is mostly text rather than photos, there's little to compress — you may get a much worse file that's barely smaller.

FAQ

Will the text still be selectable/searchable afterward?
No — every page is redrawn as a single image to actually shrink the file, so the result is an image-based PDF. Text, links, and form fields from the original are not preserved. If you need to keep those, this isn't the right tool.
Why didn't it get much smaller?
A PDF that's already small, or made mostly of text rather than large embedded images, has little left to compress. Try a lower quality value for a bigger reduction.
